The Integrated Research Enterprise
It is time to get strategic
If you're in a leadership position, most of your time is currently spent making sure everyone understands each other — not building the strategic architecture that would let your researchers, and the people who support them, actually thrive.
This course gives you what firefighting never does: bounded and protected time to build the architecture instead of just holding the line.
What you leave with is yours to keep: a strategy document for your institution, built by you, and ready to use on day 1.
BUILD YOUR RESEARCH ENTERPRISE TODAY
What would your research enterprise look like if it were designed, instead of accumulated one urgent fix at a time?
We call the answer the Integrated Research Enterprise and we built it using the same strategic frameworks that are used in complex organizations.
This course goes beyond research enterprise administration or management.
We aim for transformative redesign of the research enterprise.
Who is this course for?
- Ready to leave reactivity. The leaders who are already doing strategic work in theory, but whose actual calendars are consumed by tactical overload.
- Opting out of burnout. The leaders who are doing all the things all the time, coming home exhausted while ruefully preparing (as if for battle) each morning.
- Stop with rinse and repeat approaches. The leaders who want to disrupt the status quo through influence, evidence and early wins.
The Integrated Research Enterprise was created specifically to look beyond our daily time sinks and activity traps to create a vision for the new research enterprise.
What is covered in this course?
Why Now?
The research funding landscape isn't static, and the institutions that treat their research enterprise as a fixed cost center rather than a strategic asset are the ones that will feel that shift hardest.
The Integrated Research Enterprise doesn't ask you to predict the future, instead it gives you a way to build an enterprise with resilient architecture, practical knowledge and skills, to proactively meet the future of research.
Meet Your Instructors
Dr. Jessica Venable has spent over 25 years working at the national level, across universities of every kind — from direct proposal support to hiring the people who represent institutional interests in Washington, DC.
Dr. Faye Farmer has spent over 15 years inside the research enterprise, founding two research development offices from the ground up and consulting on the design of several more.
There is no other training like this.
We've seen the same failure modes repeat across enough institutions to know what actually predicts strategic success
-- and what doesn't.
What’s Inside the Integrated Research Enterprise?
This course is grounded in history and research, but not constrained by it.
Through engaging short videos, you will work your way through the creation of a strategy document that you can implement on day 1.
Academic Research
A review of past and current trends in academic research to create action plans. This module introduces horizon scanning in order to gain insight and make informed decisions. This is the groundwork needed to design the research enterprises of the future.
Research Maturation Models
Using our exclusive methodology, you will assess your current institutional model. Leveraging this, you will identify your desired state. We teach you the levers to pull to achieve research enterprise clarity.
Research Professionalization
In this module, we explain how a professional services model can unleash the capacity of individuals within the research enterprise. We delve into roles, training, and importantly, how roles are synergistic.
Tools & Platforms
Here, we outline current and emerging tools used in the research enterprise. From forming team to submitting proposals, these tools are undergoing substantial changes with the advent of AI.
Visioning
This module asks you to synthesize the modules to craft your vision of a research enterprise. This includes the standard 30, 60, 90 day plan. But, we take it one step further - you create a vision of yourself as a leader.
